Summer is here! Jasper is back with a D.O.G.S. special!

Hi! I'm Jasper! As Director of Grand Sales [D.O.G.S.] I put my dog brain to work to make this a great summer. Summer's the time to run to the park, wag your tail, and roll around in the grass on your back. There's never a good time to be injured, especially summertime. The first line of defense against injuries is to make sure you're in good shoes. So it's time to check your shoes for wear and tear, and rotate a new pair into the mix. Summer's also time to get a fresh new look with fun, bright apparel. Colors of summer highlight the store.

So update your shoes, brighten your wardrobe, and pick up some accessories this June and the GFR crew to give you something extra. The June Jasper Special:

Purchase $200 in shoes and/or apparel and get a cool, mesh Asics drawstring bag sporting the new Gallagher Fitness logo. These handy bags are available in blue, purple, pink, black, orange, yellow, green, maroon and red. You get to pick your own color. Mention the Jasper Special and the bag is yours!

For June only - another Jasper special. Pick up a copy of the Salem Monthly Newspaper and find the Gallagher Fitness Resources advertisement. You'll be so happy you did that you'll want to roll around in the grass and kick your feet in the air!

Also, check out the injury prevention opportunities this month at Gallagher's. We have educational opportunities to keep you healthy and your tail wagging! See below for detials.

Trigger Point Class - June 15

Trigger Point Technologies - TP Therapy Tools

Upcoming Trigger Point Classes at GFR

In the Trigger Point class, you get educated through a better appreciation of which muscles are tight and how to release them for better performance. We address common running conditions like IT Band Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis, Shin Splints, Piriformis Syndrome and more. We provide a way for you to take care of yourself by creating elasticity in the muscles and treating the cause of a problem, rather than just the symptoms. You'll perform at a higher level and minimize the aches and pains and conditions that steer you off the path toward your goals.

Gallagher's carries the entire line of Trigger Point Tools and DVD's. We are currently the only store in Oregon to carry these items. John and Susan Gallagher are the only certified instructors in Oregon for the Trigger Point Classes. Learn how to take care of yourself! The Trigger Point Therapy website is full of great information. TP Therapy Link

We believe you can accomplish things you never thought possible. When training for distance events, we guide you toward your goals, but you do the work. From time to time, aches and pains occur and whether you're a beginner or a veteran it's not always easy to know when to push through the discomfort and when to back off. Each time you return from a set-back, whether short-term or extended, you learn something new and gain more knowledge in how to deal with it the next time around. We believe this learning process, this "runner's education" is vital to personal improvement.

Team GFR Runner's Ed Session #1 - Running Injuries - Awareness and Prevention

  • TEAM GFR RUNNERS ED SESSION #1: Running Injuries - Awareness and Prevention
  • Tuesday, June 16, 6:15-7:45pm at GFR
  • Location: GFR – 135 Commercial St NE
  • Fee: $25.00 – Free for Team GFR Half Marathon/Marathon Program Members
  • Limited to the first 25 people to sign up.
  • RSVP required to susan@activesalem.com or call 503-364-4198

This class will be taught by John & Susan and Keely Linn, Physical Therapist and owner of Celilo Physical Therapy Clinic. As mentioned above in the Trigger Point section, aches and pains occur from time to time, and whether you're a beginner or a veteran it's not always easy to know when to push through the discomfort and when to back off. When faced with an injury that curtails your training, it's not only frustrating, but may also force a change in your event plans. If not treated properly, or if you come back too fast, too soon, conditions may be worsened and recovery time prolonged, further adding to the frustration.

This injury prevention session is an opportunity to have an increased awareness of how injuries occur, how to deal with them when present, and how to prevent them from occuring in the first place.

  • Causes: posture/body mechanics, training errors, exercise errors, shoes, dehydration
  • Types: (by area - back, hip, knee, calf, foot) Most common: IT Band Syndrome, hamstring strain, Piriformis Syndrome, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, anterior compartment syndrome
  • Treatment: Acute - RICE; Chronic - posture, mechanics, joint restriction, muscle issues, neural issues, supportive treatment, stretching, strengthening, balance, cross training, return to running from time off
  • Prevention: workout variety; rest and recovery; sensible alternate activities; muscle elasticity for optimal function; shoes; patience; fueling/hydration; cross training

Look for More on TEAM GFR RUNNERS ED 101 appearing on our website soon. This class with Keely Linn will be a first in a series of topics and educational sessions that runners should have in their personal knowledge base. Between now and the end of the summer, we will have four sessions lined up with guest speakers on topics that will help you be a better runner! Free for Team GFR Half Marathon/Marathon Program Members; $25 for all others
